When night falls, one hears it rattle in many German bedrooms at night. To the chagrin of all present persons. But how do these annoying sounds come about and what can be done about it? Why are people even snoring? The most common causes

The causes of snoring are very diverse. But not all sounds that are generated during sleep can also be defined as snoring. Some people just breathe very loudly or make noises while dreaming. In medicine there is no exact guideline what exactly can be defined as snoring.

Snoring is caused by vibrations in the area of   the base of the tongue and the soft palate. Snoring is also called Rhonchopathy in medical terminology.

That’s why men snore more often than women

Snoring About 60% of men are affected. In about 40% of women and about 10 of the children, the disturbing noises during sleep also occur.

Women snore less often, because the female sex hormones ensure that the mucous membranes in the palate and throat are more elastic. In men, this region is more hardened, which intensifies the snoring sounds – as well as a falling back tongue.

Can snoring be dangerous?

Are you one of those who cut down whole forests at night? Then it is important to find out if you “only” snore or have breathing pauses at night. Because snoring could also be a symptom of so-called sleep apnea, which can severely affect everyday life due to extreme fatigue and lack of concentration. And those who take heavy snoring lightly risk even an increased risk of hypertension, stroke and heart attack.

That’s why you should have your snoring checked out by a doctor. In the sleep laboratory, you can find out if sleep apnea is really behind your snoring – which is the case in about 4% of all men.

That’s why we’re snoring at all!

Short-term snoring is often triggered by a cold, as it comes to a disabled nasal breathing. But also overweight, sleeping in the supine position, the wrong pillow and high alcohol consumption in the evening often cause snoring.

A Scandinavian study provides a hitherto unknown reason for nocturnal sawing: After that, the risk of later snoring regularly increases by more than a quarter when having contact with dogs as a baby.


You can do that if your partner suffers from the snoring sounds

Even if your partner has long since fled on the sofa or in the guest room, you can still do something to restore peace.

Maybe you have tried all anti-snoring aids such as nasal plasters, nose pads, googles or chin straps in vain and now even consider surgery on the soft palate into consideration.

Before you go under the knife, you should first try the following gentle measures against snoring:

  • Bette up

Slatted frame at the headboard one hand width higher. Or just under the bed legs two thick books or a bed increase.

Good to know: Anti-snoring pillows, which only increase the neck-and-head area, promote snoring, as they can bend the airways. Also a too big pillow increases the nocturnal noise level.

  • Light food

Do not eat a heavy meal after 6pm. Because then the blood goes out for hours from the mucous membranes, down into the digestive organs and you snore rather.

  • Let the tirelesses go

Anything that makes you sleepy makes your muscles relax in the nasopharynx. Classic muffs are alcohol, sleeping pills, tranquillizers, antihistamines of the older generation, certain cough blockers or antidepressants.

  • Diet

Losing weight lowers the volume. Most snorers carry a few pounds too much through life, fat also accumulates in the area of   the soft palate and tongue. If you lose weight, you will snore less often or at least quietly.

  • Anti-snore splint

Not just for people who have problems with crunching, a jaw splint can help. If the lower jaw is shortened, custom-made jaw rails (protrusion splints, up to 1000 euros, cash registers rarely pay) can help the dentist. They hold the lower jaw forward and prevent the tongue from falling back, thus blocking the breathing of the mouth.

  • The right sleeping position

Did you know that back sleepers snore more often and loudest? So rather lay down while falling asleep.

  • Air

Sleep with the window open and use a humidifier. So you keep away dust and allergens that can swell the nose. Even pets have lost nothing in the bedroom of snorers with snorers, their hair could irritate the respiratory tract.
